Women from all walks of life turn
to breast augmentation surgery as a way to enhance their
breast size and their quality of life. Some women might
simpy be dissatisfied with the size or shape of their
breasts, while others may be suffering from a change
due to pregnancy or aging. Whatever the motivation, this
procedure can be a safe, remarkable way to improve ones
breasts.
There are a variety of incisions
and approaches that can be used in performing a breast
augmentation. You and the doctor can discuss your options
and decide upon the one that is most appropriate for
your needs and goals. Once the incision is made, a pocket
must be created within the breast tissue, and can be
placed
either
under
or
over the muscle wall. The surgeon will then place the
implant, usually saline, into this pocket, and subtly
suture the incision point.
Breast augmentation is generally
performed on an out-patient basis, and most women can
usually return to work in 4 days to a week.
Risks:
With any elective procedure, there is always a slight
chance of temporary risks such as bleeding or infection.
Some patients report a decrease of nipple
sensitivity, but this is fortunately quite rare and
can be avoided. A minor portion of patients might also
experience a tighteting of the implant due to excessive
scarring. This can be remedied, but will probably require
a repeat procedure.
Costs:
Can range from about $4500-7500,
but depends on the patient's specific situation and surgery
choices.
