Liposuction
What is liposuction?
Liposuction (LYE-po-suk-shun) is a
surgical procedure that can improve body areas
containing excess fat. These are usually fatty areas that
are resistant
to nutrition and fitness programs, so this procedure is
perfect for patients who are mostly fit, but are bothered
by "problem" areas. Common areas of treatment include
thighs, hips, abdomen, and arms..
Your surgeon will first make a small
incision that will allow a hollow tube called
a cannula (kan-u'-la) to be inserted. At the other end
of the cunnula is a machine that acts as a vacuum and will
loosen and extract the area's fat deposits and fluids.
Is liposuction safe?
While all elective procedure involve
a certain degree of potential risks, liposuction is usually
very safe. It is a debated belief that patients of normal
weight with firm, elastic skin and isolated areas of fatty
deposits will enjoy safer and better results. Carefully
choosing a qualified, experienced doctor can also assure
you of safety and satisfaction.
Liposuction is usually performed
on an out-patient basis under general anesthesia. This
can vary, however, with atient and doctor preferences.
